GREENACRES MIDDLE ORGANIZES "RACHEL'S CLOSET"
Members of the Fellowship for Christian Athletes and Student Council at Greenacres Middle School wanted to initiate a project that keeps on giving, even after they go on to high school. After hearing about Rachel's Challenge, they came up with the idea for "Rachel's Closet" to help fellow students in need of the basics; school uniforms, shoes, backpacks and toiletries. Rachel Scott was the first student killed in the Columbine High School massacre in Littleton, Colorado. To carry on her belief that one good deed can start a chain reaction, Scott's family began the non-profit organization Rachel's Challenge. It has since swept the country, serving as the catalyst at schools and in communities for projects that help others. Elizabeth Oliver, Student Council sponsor, and Kathy Einerson, FCA sponsor, decided more good could be done by uniting the efforts of their two organizations. "The kids said they wanted to do something that helps our kids," Oliver said. "It was their desire to help fellow students."
That is how "Rachel's Closet" came to be. There was already a clothes closet of sorts in the front office for students in need of uniforms. But members of Greenacres' FCA and Student Council found a space, held a school-wide clothing drive and organized the closet like a store. Now, students have a place to go for help when they have outgrown their uniforms or need other supplies and finances are tight at home. Cole Barnhill, Student Council President, said "It feels good that we're helping everyone have an equal opportunity. I'm more proud of my school knowing we can give back." To donate to "Rachel's Closet," feel free to drop off new or gently used school uniforms at Greenacres, as well as shoes, backpacks and lunch boxes. New socks and underwear are also needed. Monetary donations are also readily accepted. Barnhill realizes he will never know which of his fellow classmates "Rachel's Closet" may help. It is designed for anonymity. He also won't see how it flourishes after he moves on to high school next year. He has hopes for it, though. "I hope it continues to expand and its legacy can live on," Barnhill said. "But I also hope one day there isn't the need for clothing and necessities." |
